So I finally went to the Bite Lip Lab to do the custom lipstick creation. In my previous post about the lip lab I had mentioned that I didn’t really want to pay that much for one lipstick especially seeing as there is no shortage to my lipstick hoarding….but also mentioned that it would make a great gift. Hint
My husband either reads my blog (probably not) or maybe just knows me very well but either way he gave me the 2 x custom lipstick experience as a Mother’s Day gift from Penelope (if you are reading this, nice work sweetheart, xo).
So a couple of weeks ago I went to the Bite Lip Lab on Queen Street and spent a fun 40 minutes working with Austin – one of their friendly, chatty lip lab artists. Here he is displaying our finished product:
There are actually two options available; create a Custom or Bespoke lipstick. Here’s how it works:
Custom
Step 1 – Choose a shade from Bite Beauty’s exclusive lip pigments
Step 2 – Choose a finish: glossy sheer, matte creme, amuse bouche
Step 3 – Choose an all-natural scent: cherry, mint, vanilla, citrus mango, violet, coconut, wild berry, fresh citrus
Austin then custom mixed a few different shade options in glossy sheer pinks for me to try on. I ended up going with the very first one that he made as it was pretty much bang on what I’d asked for – a sheer nude pink.
He then heated the mixture, stuck it in one of those spinning things that mixes liquids and poured it into a metal bullet form. The form then sits on a super cold metal flat top freezer where it chills for 7 to 8 minutes.
Once the lipstick had cooled and solidified, Austin opened the top of the form and set the lipstick into the bullet casing and my lipstick was done!
The Bespoke option is similar to the Custom option except instead of choosing a pigment in step 1, a Lip Lab artist will help you create a unique shade to your exact specifications by custom mixing pigments together. It’s a longer and more expensive process ($150 for 2).
Overall it was a really cool process and I would say it is actually worth the $55 because it’s about the total experience more than just the final lipstick. But if you’re still cringing at the price then you may want to start dropping the gift hints, ha!
All of Bite’s regular line of products as well as some exclusive lip kits are also available at the Lip Lab so if you don’t want to go the custom route then you can always stop in and shop the regular range. There are now three locations; Toronto, NYC and San Francisco.
Love this! 🙂
